I know that we all have a tendency to look at the past tense of the word motion. This is because we are used to thinking of it as the present tense, which is also the most common. However, the word motion is actually a derivation of the third law of motion. The third law of motion states that “the direction and velocity of a body can change due to external forces”.
This is one of those words that makes my brain hurt. I like to think of it as the law of the most likely or most probable. It’s simply a statement of fact about things that can happen in the world. In the case of motion, the direction and velocity of a body can change due to external forces (the force of gravity for example), but if the direction and velocity have not changed then the motion is still the same motion.
The third law of motion simply states that the movement of a body can change due to external forces. So when we say that the direction and velocity of a body can change due to external forces, we’re simply stating a fact that the motion can change due to external forces.
It turns out that the third law of motion applies to motion in all three dimensions and if an object is in motion it is moving in all three directions simultaneously. If the object is not moving, the motion is still the motion because external forces still apply.
